New to Chess960 - have problems with 2 systems.....
Posted 2455 days ago by networkman
At JWM's urging, I've rejoined the project and will work with him to sort out the problems. I've brought 3 machines back online, two of which are XP2800s and thus close enough to his XP2500 to make comparisons. I'm also running XP Pro(32bit).
Soon as I have some results it'll be easier to make comparisons. It's good to be back on the project now that the temperatures have cooled enough for me to be running my machines again. :)

Interesting bit of info.. I'm not sure how to do an optimized app in this project?
My contribution has been a combination of brute force and personal lunacy - with the exception of HEIMDALL, my PC at work, the rest are all owned and operated by me running this project 24/7. :D

Wrap-up with the PrimeGen app - deadline on workunits?
Posted 2575 days ago by networkman
Therefore it would be nice to cancel all w/u which you cannot complete before deadline to give them to other users.
But of course crunch so much as you can. :-)
I hope it helps to make a decision.
I understand; when I get home from work in about a 1/2 hour or so, I'll do some quick math and cancel any WUs that I know cannot be completed on the machine they're on in the time remaining. Thanks. :)

Wrap-up with the PrimeGen app - deadline on workunits?
Posted 2576 days ago by networkman
Most of the computers in my fleet will have completed their workunits before the set deadline per, which seems to be about 2 June @ 8:35pm EST.
However one of my machines, "marduk" - ID:1613 has about 100 WUs in its cache and is not likely to complete all of them before the deadline, so the question is: Should I just shut down the machine when the deadline passes? Or should I let it crunch on and complete the work and return it? I'm not concerned about the credit aspect - I've already achieved my goals in that area. ;)

new wu (double range - double duration)

Same here - nothing over 20 minutes yet. Of course this could be due to us having processors faster than the one used to give the approximation of 20 to 40 minutes. :)

Primegen 5.13 errors
Posted 2589 days ago by networkman
I posted about this a little earlier this morning in the Q&A section of the board HERE.
It would appear that the devs forgot to include the yacasdll.dll file in the v5.13 primgen application upgrade. If you suspend/exit BOINC and copy that file into your path like c:\winnt or c:\windows etc that should take care of the problem. :)

Problem with primegen 5.13 application
Posted 2589 days ago by networkman
Currently many of my machines that are running either PrimeGrid or Chess960 projects which both use the "primegen" application are encountering errors with a missing .dll file in the project's folder.
So far, I'm noticing that clients that were running perfectly fine with primegen 5.11 or 5.12, now are reporting that "yacasdll.dll" is missing from all paths. This file existed in the "c:\program files\BOINC\projects\www.chess960athome.org_alpha" folder previously but seems to be getting deleted with the upgrade to the 5.13 application which causes clients to crash.
Edit#1: Okay, I can confirm that once the primegen application is upgraded to 5.13 in the Chess960 folder then the yacasdll.dll file IS being deleted. My solution thus far is just to place a copy of said .dll in my alternate paths like c:\winnt or c:\winnt\system32. (replace "winnt" with "windows" as appropriate. These are all Win2k & WinXP systems.
Edit#2: While I was trying to figure out the above problem, I tried upgrading to new Boinc 5.4.9 client - BIG mistake! It fails with the Chess960 project such that EVERY workunit downloaded from your servers resulted in an immediate "Computation Error". I've sinced un-installed and re-installed 5.2.13 and all is back to normal.

I read that question about graphics for this DC project, and I kept getting the image of "Battlechess" from Interplay or "Archon" from Electronic Arts in my mind. :)
Ha, Archon, you've been around for a while. :-)
I think I used to play that on a Commodore 64.
Indeed. I used to play it on the C=64 too. Kill all of your opponent's pieces or capture all 5 of the power points. ;) Was alot of fun - I liked the Banshees the best. :)
