Thanks for the script. I'll send it to JonasD but that is not the root problem...
I know from JonasD (Project administrator), that the validator itself shuts down if he detects an exception. Then he wants a manual clarifying from someone that solves the problem(s). According to the wiki at Berkeley the validator can then be started again manually or starts automatically after a given timeframe.
Rytis from PG has done this more than once, says a look through my emails to him...

if admin does not really change anything in validator script, and just tweaks on/off setting, this also can be done by script

you can add many commands before IF statement is finished (with FI)

hey ron, instead of kicking the script, run this

put this code into some file in /etc/cron.hourly/ , e.g. vi kickvalidator

#!/bin/bash

if [ $(ps aux | grep 'VALIDATORPROCESSNAME' | grep -v grep | wc -l | tr -s "\n") -eq 0 ] ; then cd VALIDATOR_FULL_PATH ; ./RUN_VALIDATOR ; fi

then run (maybe with sudo):

chmod a+rx /etc/cron.hourly/kickvalidator

then it will kick validator itself once in an hour


where:
VALIDATORPROCESSNAME - process name to identify validator, you can find it in ps aux
VALIDATOR_FULL_PATH - folder with validator binary. you can run pwd in this folder to see the path
./RUN_VALIDATOR - binary of validator

Past some investigation the last weeks, i believe the number of incidents are equal to the number of work units. In the last weeks we had only some units and got no problems. Seems to be a load problem of the server (get not enough calculating time from the host) or chess960 hits the 100 upload slots thing from boinc.

I send a message to the admin.

Since send at 10:30 I only have WUs that stand still or produce client errors.
Scanning through those WUs there is no one having returned one.
Might there be something wrong with the whole batch?
